Everything about Morfran totally explained
Afagddu (from the Welsh
y fagddu, "Utter darkness"), also spelled
Avagddu in
Middle Welsh. In the
Book of Taliesin he's also called
Morfran (
Morvran in Middle Welsh, from the Welsh
mawr, "Big", and
bran, "Crow") but named Afagddu because of the darkness of his skin and his hideousness.
He was the extremely ugly son of
Ceridwen and
Tegid Foel. Afagddu's mother, Ceridwen, tried to help her son make his way in the world by creating a potion whose first three drops would give him knowledge of the future. Unfortunately, she gave
Gwion Bach the job of stirring the brew; he splashed three drops on his fingers and licked them, whereupon he gained the knowledge, and Afagddu remained ugly and despised.
He is mentioned in the tale
Culhwch and Olwen as being one of only three men to survive the
Battle of Camlann. No one dared strike him in the battle because he was so hairy and hideous that everyone supposed him to be a "demon helping". In this he's the
yin to
Sanddef Pryd Angel's yang. He is the son of
Tegid Foel and brother to
Afagddu in the
Mabinogion. In the
Book of Taliesin Morfran and Afagddu are one and the same.
